The opening ceremony of Chinese Academy of Sciences-Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica 2014 (the third session) University Student Summer Camp was held in Chenggu Hall on the morning of July 6th. 137 university students from 42 universities in 19 provinces and cities participated in this year’s summer camp. Deputy Directors YE Yang, LI Jia and Professor SHEN Jingkang at SIMM attended the ceremony on invitation. HE Min, Deputy Director of Graduate Student Department hosted the ceremony.

The opening ceremony began at 9 am, and Deputy Director LI Jia addressed a welcome speech. He gave congratulations and a warm welcome to the students attending the Summer Camp and wished all the students could benefit a lot from the Summer Camp.

Next, Deputy Director YE Yang introduced the 80 years ofhistory and the future development of Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica to the students. The students were impressed by the long history, the advanced scientific researchand active atmosphere of SIMM.

Finally, using the latest data and examples, Professor SHEN Jingkang presented the opportunities and challenges in innovative drug discovery and development worldwide. He encouraged the students to join SIMM and become new talents contributing to the advancement of Chinese pharmaceutical industry.

After the ceremony, mentors and students representatives from five majors including pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, pharmaceutics and computer-aided drug design, gave a detailed introduction of the basic situation, research focus, research programs and teaching faculty of each discipline. This helped the students to further understand the scientific research of each major.

During the next week, students in the Summer Camp will visit the laboratories and communicate with mentors and graduate students face to face.
