With the joint efforts of Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM), CAS and Sino-Swiss Science and Technology Cooperation (SSSTC) Project, the First Stepping Stone Symposium on Natural Products and Drug Discovery was successfully held at Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, CAS on 23rd-26th October, 2013. The symposium is the first bilateral seminar between China and Switzerland in the field of natural products and innovative drug discovery.

As one of the SSSTC projects, the series conferences of Stepping Stone Symposium have attracted mutual top researchers and enterprises from related fields, promote the cooperation of academic and industrial organizations and become the stepping stones in the fields of translational research. Two seminars, Symposium on Cancer Research and Neurodegenerative Disease and Symposium on Medical Technology, have been successfully held in 2012.

17 delegates from Switzerland, mainly from ETH Zürich, University of Geneva and University of Basel, representatives from Roche and Novartis, as well as over 60 domestic academic and industrial experts, graduate students from China gathered at SIMM. 21 high quality lectures were presented followed by a round table discuss in the symposium. This Symposium provided the participants not only new perspectives and ideas in natural products and drug discovery research, but also a strong promoter for further research cooperation and scientific exchanges between two countries.
