Gynuraprocumbens (Merr.) (Asteraceae) is an annual ever green shrub distributed in western and central Africa, and from southern China throughout continental South-East Asia and Papua New Guinea . In Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, the plant has been traditionally used for treatment of eruptive fevers, rash, kidney diseases, migraines, constipation, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and cancer.

Most of these traditional uses have been validated by scientificand pharmacological studies in the cell or animal models, which disclosed the aqueousor alcoholic extract of edible leaves of G. procumbens to have antioxidant, antiherpessimplex virus, antihyperglycemic , anti-inflammatory , antihyperlipidemic, antiulcerogenic , antihypertensive, and antitumor properties.

The chemistry of G. procumbens was sparsely reported. Due to Prof.TAN Changheng’s Group continuing interest in this plant, a further phytochemical investigation on the CHCl3 fraction of the MeOHextract of the leaves was carried out, which led to the isolation of one news esquiterpenoid, muurol-4-ene-1b,3b,10b-triol , and two sesquiterpene glycosides, together with three known sesquiterpenoids.

The details of the isolation and structure elucidation of 1 – 3 are reported in this article.

The result has been published online on “Helvetica ChimicaActa” (DOI: 10.1002/hlca.201300197)
