Director of SIMM
Prof. Li Jia

The Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was founded in 1932.

Throughout its 80 year history, SIMM has produced many outstanding pharmaceutical researchers, developed many new drugs of notable influence in the international arena and also created an innovative drug discovery and development system of international standard to serve our nation.

The institutional environment and cultural characteristics within SIMM have since undergone tremendous changes.

Today, our institute adopts an open, service-oriented model and win-win approach where it continues to play an important, stimulating and leading role in our country’s drug research programs.

To ensure that important pharmaceutical research and development work continue to progress, it is vital that SIMM continues its mission. China’s bio-pharmaceutical industry has now entered a major strategic and transitional period. It relies heavily on science and technology for innovation and transforming growth patterns.

To ensure further success, SIMM will:

(1) adhere to an integrated innovative strategy that will meet our national strategic needs, continue its work on scientific advancements to reach new frontiers and actively implement a comprehensive integration of disciplines;

(2) adopt a win-win strategy for our international co-operation programs as we become recognized as a major international institution;

(3) focus on human resource development strategy and sustainable development strategy in SIMM.

Within this framework of operation, we will collaborate with our colleagues in various fields to create a national drug innovation system to help produce innovative Chinese pharmaceutical brands.

With a concerted effort, constant improvements, a hardworking and an innovative attitude, we will make valuable and historic contributions to transform China’s pharmaceutical industry from a stage of imitation to a stage of innovation.

May I take this opportunity to extend my gratitude and appreciation to the following groups of people who have helped make our achievements possible:

1.To the past generations of scientists who tirelessly devoted their lives to Chinese pharmaceutical science!

2.To all my colleagues in SIMM who are committed to the development of our pharmaceutical research and development capacity!

3.To government authorities, our local and foreign friends who have given us great support in our efforts to develop the national drug innovation system!

Thank you all!
