Cai-Guang Yang received his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 1997. He earned his PhD in Organic Chemistry on the total synthesis of natural products from Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2002. He moved to the University of Chicago to begin his post-doctoral training in the Chemistry Department. After six years of post-doctoral work at the interface of chemistry and biology, he returned to Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, CAS in 2008 to start his independent research and has been appointed as a professor. His research interests are in the field of Medicinal Chemistry, Structure Biology, and Chemical Biology related to RNA methylation, antimicrobial resistance, small-molecule inhibitor/activator, and drug discovery.

Research progresses have been achieved that include 1) the identification of small-molecule regulators that modulate bacterial virulence and revealing the molecular mechanisms, 2) the discovery of chemical probes that selectively inhibit the demethylation of FTO and monitor the cellular location of FTO thus impacts the cellular m6A in mRNA, and 3) the first validation of the SPOP-substrate protein interaction as a truly attractive target specific to kidney cancer that may yield novel drug discovery efforts. These studies aid to understand the function and mechanism of untargeted proteins better in molecular precision and provide the high-value chemical probes potential for basic biology and drug discovery.
